During pregnancy hormones can do some interesting things to prepare your body for birth. One of the things they do is relax ligaments to help the body during birth. Drink a lot of water when you are pregnant. You must drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Water is the most natural therapy to flush out the excess toxins from the body. Thus, the water will expel all the toxic fluids of the body which would otherwise settle in the feet and cause them to swell. Drinking a lot of water could increase the frequency of urination in pregnant women, but that is actually a good sign, as urination is a way to expel the wastes from the body.

Bend and pump: Swinging your arms while you walk is a good way to loosen up, but the centrifugal force it creates can make blood pool in your hands, causing swelling. "Try bending your arms 90 degrees at the elbows, and use them as pistons," suggests Dr. Duncan. "Raise them up higher than you normally would and swing with the cadence of your walking gait." While you're doing that, keep your hands loosely open.

It may appear very simple, but at times certain complexities may further lead to serious concerns. Therefore, one must follow a proper treatment procedure for swollen feet, though its treatment generally depends upon the cause of the swelling. The first and one of the major options for the treatment for swollen feet that is used these days is elevating the legs above the level of the heart. Elevating legs above the level of heart helps in putting the least pressure on the backs of the knees and thighs and lower back.

Painful feet can be avoided if you take care of them and keeping a careful check on the feet can also give early warning signs about serious health problems such as diabetes, arthritis and poor circulation. You should check with your doctor if you begin to suffer with unusually cold feet, cramps or numbness: changes in skin color, or a sore on the foot which doesn't heal, or becomes infected. The message is don't wait until your feet hurt. Take good care of them and check them over daily for cuts, blisters, infected toenails or swelling.

Swelling in joints, stiffness in joints, restricted mobility in joints and redness are the reason for arthritis. Frostbite is another cause of swelling feet. Swelling of the hands and feet or other areas of the body can occur due to abnormal kidney function, kidney diseases, congestive heart failure, protein deficiency, cancer, or sodium retention. Pregnancy, standing for prolonged periods of time, premenstrual syndrome, an injury, oral contraceptives, low thyroid, anemia and deficiencies of potassium and vitamin B, or allergic reactions are the other reasons for swelling feet.
